Maritime and Naval
Image up-date: Monday 3 May 2010
Whenever possible I try to photograph at sea (though for obvious reasons this is not always possible). This includes trips on trawlers and other vessels.
Up to almost the end of the Cold War I was a civilian volunteer, sea-going member of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS), sailing primarily out of Poole and Portland, in Dorset. The RNXS was a modern naval version of Dad's Army, manned by friendly ‘reprobates’ from all walks of life, though I'm not sure the MoD the would have seen it as such! It was an excuse to spend time at sea, participating in the occasional naval excercise - including, on one occasion, a games of darts in Falmouth with the KGB members of a Soviet spy trawler!
My thanks to the various fishing agencies and fisherman I've met over the years who by their industry have provided me with many of these photographic opportunities.
