By definition illustration is a means of explaining. By default this means, to me, a visual explanation. Although having been trained in traditional illustration techniques, I've subsequently explored digital illustration, using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, etc. However, whilst digital illustration has its place, my preference is for traditional techniques. During my many years at the Arts University Bournemouth, I wrote or contributed to a number of text books on illustration techniques. These included The Encyclopaedia of Airbrush Techniques (two separate editions) and The New Guide to Illustration (contributing author).
